MAIL SERVICE |
An Act to
provide for the performance of the mail service between the United Kingdom and
the Port of Nassau, in the island of New Providence, and elsewhere. | 16 of 1873

1. This Act may be cited as the Mail Service Act. | Short title. |
2. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, | Interpretation. |
"Minister"
means the Minister responsible for Inter-Island Passenger Freight and Mail
Service. |
3. It shall be lawful for the Minister, from time to
time as it may be necessary, to cause a contract or contracts to be entered
into with such good and substantial person or persons, and for and upon such
terms and conditions as shall be approved by the Minister, for a mail service
between the United Kingdom and Nassau, by the way of the port of New York, in
the United States of America, if a suitable contract can be made; or, failing
that, by the way of some other and nearer port in the United States, and either
with or without communication with or conveyance of mails between any port out
of the said United States, in and by such good, substantial and sufficient
steam vessel or vessels as may be approved of for the purposes. | Provisions for the conveyance of mails by steamer

4. In any contract entered into under this Act the
conveyance of passengers to and from Nassau and from and to all other ports
from which the contract vessels shall take their departure, or to which they
shall proceed shall be provided for: | Passengers and freight provided for. |
Provided
that it shall be lawful for the Minister if he shall think fit so to do- |
(a) to make
provision in any contracts entered into under this Act for regulating the rates
of freight, and generally controlling the same; |
(b) to make any
separate contracts for the conveyance of cargo and regulating and controlling
the rates of freight thereon. |
5. (1) Until a contract is entered into under this Act
it shall be lawful for the Minister to make temporary arrangements for the
conveyance of mails and passengers and cargo between a port in the United
States of America and the Port of Nassau. | Temporary arrangements may be made. |
(2) The Minister
may make any contract or contracts, permanent or temporary, dealing with the
conveyance of mails and passengers and cargo collectively or with any of the
same separately. |
6. The expenses attending the carrying into execution
of this Act shall be paid out of the Consolidated Fund, by warrant of the
Minister of Finance. | Expenses. |
